Why A Bequest?

A bequest is a gift you make through your will. Parmenter Community Health Care* was started through the bequest of Jonathan Maynard Parmenter of Wayland in the early 20th century. We invite you to join in this long tradition to ensure that the services of Parmenter Community Health Care will continue to be available to our community.

By making a bequest you…
  • Leave something permanent behind
  • Give something back to the community
  • Do more than you might have been able to do in your lifetime
  • Receive tax advantages
Parmenter Community Health needs your support. Through us, you help ensure that your neighbors receive quality health care and supportive services when they need them.
  • The Federal estate tax exemption has changed for 2011 and 2012. Many estates now exempt from Federal estate taxes nonetheless will be subject to Massachusetts estate taxes or may become subject to Federal estate taxes if the Federal exemption changes again after 2012. Properly drawn estate planning documents can help you reduce or eliminate Federal and Massachusetts estate taxes and benefit Parmenter as well.

  • A bequest allows you—and Parmenter—to plan ahead and ensure that your wishes are carried out.

  • Just as Jonathan Maynard Parmenter inspired those who followed him to create a vibrant health resource, your generosity will inspire others to join in a continuing tradition of supporting a vital community resource.

Note: Parmenter’s exact legal name is “Parmenter VNA and Community Care”

How You Can Give

Simple Charitable Bequest.

Parmenter can be named in your will to receive a specific amount or a percentage of your estate. Your bequest can be in cash, securities, real and/or personal property, or other assets.

You may designate that your bequest is for Parmenter’s general purposes or for its endowment.

An example is: “I give and bequeath the sum of $________ dollars to Parmenter VNA and Community Care, Inc., Wayland, Massachusetts, for its general charitable purposes.”

Residual Bequest.

This is where Parmenter is named to receive the remainder, or a percentage of the remainder, of your estate after your heirs have been provided for through specific bequests that you make.

Example: “I give, devise, and bequeath the remaining balance of my estate, after all specific bequests have been satisfied, to Parmenter VNA and Community Care, Inc., Wayland, Massachusetts, for its general charitable purposes.”

Contingent Bequest.

This provides a gift to Parmenter if the heirs named in your will are no longer living at the time of your death. An example is, “I give and bequeath to (named person(s)) the sum of $_____ dollars if he or she survives me. If (names person(s)) do not survive me, I give and bequeath said amount to Parmenter VNA and Community Care, Inc., Wayland, Massachusetts, for its general charitable purposes.”

Charitable Trust.

You can create a charitable trust in your will or during your lifetime that provides income for your loved ones throughout their lives or for a period of years and then passes the remainder to Parmenter. You and your attorney should consult with us to establish a charitable trust that accomplishes your personal and philanthropic goals.

Codicil.

You may amend an existing will through a simple document without re-writing the entire will. You can add a provision for Parmenter Community Health by having your attorney draft a codicil that modifies the appropriate section of your will.

Living Trust.

Some people may benefit by creating a living trust to manage and distribute assets both during your life and after your death. Many of the ways of giving described above also apply to living trusts. Parmenter can be included as a beneficiary in such an arrangement.

Consult Your Attorney.

There are many different ways to remember Parmenter in your will. The methods in this brochure are among the most common, but your attorney may suggest other approaches based on your needs and wishes.
