HEART play sm

Helping Young Hearts Heal

HEART play sm is:

  • Children of hospice families saying goodbye to their loved ones
  • Children meeting other kids who understand illness and death and loss
  • Children celebrating the lives of deceased loved ones through the creative arts
  • Families remembering deceased relatives and friends with love
  • Grieving teens helping themselves by helping others

 A Moment in Heaven
"A Moment in Heaven" by HEART play sm participant
HEART play sm is Wayside Hospice’s award-winning, free program that uses the creative arts to help children and teens cope with the illness or death of a loved one. An art therapist encourages families in their own homes or at the hospice residence to explore and express feelings of love and grief. Creative arts activities assist family members to support one another.

The HEART play sm Workshops gather children ages 3-12 after a death. Through conversation, visual expression, music, writing, and storytelling the children share their feelings and experiences. This creative process invites new understanding about death and life.

Adolescents in Grades 7-12 are welcome to assist as mentors at all workshops. Grieving teens have found meaning by helping the younger participants.

Adults may attend an informal discussion, facilitated by Wayside Hospice staff, during HEART play sm workshops.
