Rehabilitation Services

Parmenter patients enjoy the support of a fully staffed Rehabilitation Department whose Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists have, between them, interest and expertise in all areas of health care but most particularly orthopedic conditions, stroke rehabilitation, Parkinson's Disease, cardiac/pulmonary rehab, balance disorders, mental health issues and pediatrics.

Physical therapists provide in-depth assessments of muscle strength, joint range of motion, pain levels, balance reactions and mobility skills. They provide individualized home exercise programs, gait training, balance re-education and advice on fall prevention and energy conservation. If our patient is currently more restricted and is chair or bed bound we will advise on positioning, turning and maintaining healthy skin. Together with occupational therapists, PTs also offer advice on appropriate medical equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs.

Occupational therapists will, in essence, be asking two questions. What are you trying to accomplish and what are your limitations? For example, if you are trying to be more mobile you will look at walking aids. If you are trying to bathe or shower you will be advised on grab bars, shower seats and non-slip mats. If you need help rising from lower surfaces there will be raised toilet seats, chair risers or a hospital bed to consider.

Our speech therapist will be available to assess difficulties in swallowing, eating, communication and voice functions. She will provide customized exercise programs, strategies to improve swallowing and voice production and works closely with both PT and OT to develop functional sitting postures and obtain appropriate devices to assist in eating and also communication.
